Hello

Hi! My name is Megan Sorbellini, and I am a student/artist. I started drawing when I was around 5yrs old and have always loved being creative. I continued my love for the arts throughout high school and wanted to continue that passion in college. I am currently a student at SUNY Ulster Community College and will be graduating with an Associate in Science. After Ulster, I plan to go to Binghamton University and study Architecture and Urban Studies and also continue painting and drawing.

Artist Statement

My work as an artist explores a variety of elements from reality. I use surrealism and realism throughout my pieces to convey messages that allow viewers to think outside the box. With mediums like gouache and ink, I’m able to explore different values and create certain implied textures.

As I continue to grow as an artist, I have become comfortable drawing portraits, more specifically myself as the subject. The cycle of metamorphosis has become a staple in my pieces, and by offering a different point of view, I am able to communicate that personal growth. Throughout my sketchbook and pieces thus far, my goal is to explore the boundaries of portraits and play with proportions. With my exhibition works and the shared theme of growth, my goal is to express what it feels like to become comfortable within one’s self. This is shown through symbols of chrysalis, caterpillars, and butterflies.

My goal with my art is to make you feel something. Although not all art has to evoke something inside, I think it is essential to have a sense of connection that will resonate with viewers. Especially with my exhibition works, more in imparticular my persona piece, my goal with the viewer is to feel as if they too can come out of their “self-made shells.”
